This week's Corporate L&D Institute Speaker Spotlight features Valerie Hope, Lead Regional Director of Learning at Hyatt Hotels Corporation and a Roundtable Leader, leading a session on “Bringing Your Work to Life By Mastering Your Superpowers”.
We had the chance to catch up with Valerie this week to ask her a few questions about her role, her career and her advice for aspiring HR Leaders. This is what she shared with us:
What is the biggest obstacle you’ve faced along your career path?
The biggest obstacle has been balancing my own desire for autonomy and independence with the responsibility of leading a team and providing sufficient direction, support and accountability. I don’t always get the combination right, but I am grateful that my team accepts me just the same, warts and all.
What attributes or personal characteristics do you believe are integral to your role?
1. The ability to listen generously to others with curiosity, not judgment or with the intention to “fix” them.
2. An adaptable attitude with a dose of good humor to work in fast-paced, dynamic environments with people whose needs change depending on their development levels.
3. Finally, a sense of purpose, to stay focused on what I’m committed to rather than my attachments.
What advice would you give to the next generation of professionals aspiring to become an HR Leader?
Get intimate with what turns you on or off about the world of work and embrace the knowledge and wisdom that comes with it. Having a sense of who you are makes it much easier to take ownership of your shortcomings and passions, as well as allows others the grace to authentic with you. It’s a joy to be with people who give us life vs. trigger our fight or flight response.
