This month’s Advisory Committee Spotlight is highlighting Ms. Darcy Smith, VP of Team Development at CustomInk and a past presenter at the HR Management Institute Program, having shared her expertise on “How One of the Best Companies for Millenials Attracts and Retains the Next Generation of Team Members.” We had the chance to catch up with Darcy this week to ask her a few more personal questions about her work at CustomInk and the role of a leading HR professional today.
This is what she shared with us:
What is the biggest obstacle you’ve faced along your career path?
Choosing the health of myself and my baby when I decided not to take on an exciting, large M&A initiative - I discovered I was pregnant with my second child and asked that I not lead the project due to the expected stress and potential health effects. It was one of those career altering assignments but I had to keep my priorities right.
What attributes or personal characteristics do you believe are integral to your role?
Listening with Care - Developing trusted relationships through good listening and genuine care in other’s point of view.
Being Business Minded - Have a deep understanding of the business operations, strategy and how the business generates profit (and the levers HR pulls to contribute to profit).
Pragmatism - Drive initiatives that add value and critically question the impact of them all the time.
Candid Feedback & Receptivity - Stand for your leader, peers and team through honest feedback on behaviors that may be holding them back. Also be receptive and coachable with feedback you get from others - it’s game changing when you are!
What is your advice to someone who is moving up the ranks in the field and wants to pursue a similar career path?
Really “prototype your options” and by that I mean talk with others in the position you desire, shadow roles, learn about the day-to-day, etc. before you fully commit to something you may be unhappy with or doesn’t suit you.
Always be learning. One of the many wonderful aspects of HR is that there are so many aspects to HR and so much to learn! Stop learning, stop growing. That’s it.
