This week's HR Management Institute Speaker Spotlight is highlighting Ms. Cathy Fraser, Chief HR Officer at Mayo Clinic and a presenter at the February 2018 HR Management Institute, speaking to “Shifting from Employee Engagement to Employee Experience: Accelerating People Performance at the Mayo Clinic." We had the chance to catch up with Cathy this week to ask her a few more personal questions about her work at Mayo Clinic and the role of a leading HR professional today.
This is what she shared with us:
What is the biggest obstacle you’ve faced along your career path?
For me, an obstacle is simply a hard problem to solve, not something “in the way.” My hard problems? Allocating time to the many things that interest me. Attraction toward the creative and elegant answers, knowing they may be very difficult to implement. Forming a team that is right for the purpose, not just right for the people.
What attributes or personal characteristics do you believe are integral to your role?
Curiosity to explore new ideas, at the same time be respectful of the current state. Passion toward the mission of the organization, and the energy on the execution of our people strategy.
What is your advice to someone who is moving up the ranks in the field and wants to pursue a similar career path?
Planning is great, flexibility is necessary. A positive view taken toward every situation will energize you and others around you. Focus on forward movement; often time shooting for perfection will keep you from ever starting.
Be sure not to miss Cathy's presentation at the HR Management Institute, February 25th -27th, 2018 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Amelia Island, FL.
