Nicole Dean
VP Corporate HR & Chief Diversity Officer
BELK INC

Nicole W. Dean, is currently Vice President of Corporate HR and Chief Diversity Officer of Belk Inc.  Belk is the largest privately held department store retailer ($3.5B revenues) operating over 300 stores in 16 states.

Nicole joined Belk in 2006 as Vice President of Internal Audit and has over 13 years retail industry experience with major department store chains, serving in HR, accounting and audit management roles. 

Nicole was named Chief Diversity Officer in 2008 as a “stretch assignment,” working with the CEO and executive diversity council to deepen the company’s commitment to diversity and strengthen Belk’s business case to drive sales and profitability

In Feb. 2009, Nicole fully transitioned into an HR strategy, planning, and associate relations role. She continues to serve as the company’s Chief Diversity Officer, but is also responsible for performance management, organizational development, talent acquisition, payroll planning, risk mitigation, and employee relations for the corporate office. She also serves on various task forces for policy development, branding, and employee engagement.

Regarding diversity, the company has grown it’s diverse representation in management, marketing efforts, supplier base, and community partnerships during Nicole’s
tenure.   Additionally, the company has successfully launched it’s 2 employee resource groups – Women’s Leadership Network, and Black Employee Resource Group (BERG) in the last 2 years.  Her work has positively influenced the company’s culture by engaging more officers directly in the work of the Diversity Action Councils and employee resource groups.  Nicole is also an advisor to the Johnson C. Smith Business School for developing their Retail Management program, in which Belk Inc. in collaboration with the Belk Foundation will provide a “scholars experience” for Belk Scholar awardees in Fall 2010. 

Nicole received The Diversity Forum’s 2010 diversity champion award for her commitment to diversity and inclusion.
